Claire Keegan’s writing style is minimalistic yet deeply calculated—every word is chosen with precision. Her use of language is profoundly effective: brief, but impactful. The characters in the novel feel authentic and relatable. I found a reflection of myself in Bill Furlong—in his quiet sense of unfulfillment, his search for meaning, and his appreciation for the comfort of routine and peaceful, uneventful days. 

The book explores powerful themes of compassion, courage, and the quiet moral choices we make. What stood out to me most was being granted access to Bill’s inner world—his doubts, his reflections, and his moral reckoning. I was especially drawn to the ending, where Bill is faced with a life-defining decision: to help the girl or turn away and maintain his comfortable life. 

While I found the story captivating and emotionally resonant, I was left wanting more—particularly more insight into Bill’s thoughts after his decision and how his life might change as a result. Still, the simplicity of the novel was part of its beauty. It reminded me of the value in slowing down, paying attention, and finding inner strength in doing what is right.
