Nikki on the Line by Barbara Carroll Roberts is one of my favorite books.
It is about a left-handed eighth grade girl, who absolutely loves basketball. When Nikki tries out and makes a club ball team called Action, she is thrilled. But the eight hundred dollar fee is out of her price range, so she is forced to either quit the team or come up with a solution.
At school, things aren’t any better. Her science teacher assigned a family tree project, which will have to make her reveal the worst secret of all time.
Nikki is thrilled to finally come up with a solution, but that’s cutting into practice time, and causes a huge fight with her best friend. And even though Nikki gets to stay on team Action, all the girls are better, faster and stronger than her.
When she makes a friend with the tallest girl on her team, Kate, she overhears her over-competitive dad tell her that she is a “black hole on the basketball court.”
Will Nikki be able to regain her self-confidence and make a three-pointer with the help of her friend, or will she be benched on the sidelines for the rest of the season? Read the book to find out!
If you have ever liked to play basketball, are left-handed (like me!) or just want to boost your strength and courage, this book is for you!
(4 1/2 books) = Goes on the Book-it list!
