Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt is a charming, beautifully written book. It is a young adult fiction novel.I had never heard of this book before and was very intrigued by the fact that it is a debut novel that already has a movie adaptation! Furthermore, the synopsis interested me more and left me excited to start reading!

Synopsis:

After Tova Sullivan’s husband passed and her son’s sudden tragic disappearance; she had been working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium. Keeping busy always helped her cope, mopping floors and tidying up. 

Tova finds herself becoming well acquainted with the fascinating creature, Marcellus the great pacific octopus. Marcellus finds himself uninterested in humans. He wouldn’t lift a tentacle for them…until Tova. He discovers a great secret pertaining to her son’s disappearance thirty years ago and makes it his mission to unearth the truth before it’s too late.

Review:

Admittedly, I had very high expectations for this read despite having no prior knowledge about it. To say I was blown out of the waters would be an understatement. The writing is absolutely brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed the multiple point of view chapters from each character. I truly felt for all of the characters and found myself getting very attached to them. However, I must warn my fellow soft hearted animal lovers. I cried like a baby at the end, don’t worry, they were good tears. The ending, while sad, was also beautiful and a happy ending! It was such a sweet end to a beautiful book. It leaves you feeling full and satisfied. Even after finishing the book I continue to think about it. Overall, I heavily recommend this book to anyone who loves reading fiction with a hint of mystery and a feel good found family dynamics!
