Punching Bag by Rex Ogle

This was my second time reading this beautiful and heart-breaking memoir. Punching Bag by Rex Ogle, follows the true story of a teenage Rex, growing up in an abusive and traumatizing household.

No words can properly explain the depth and importance of this story and the impact such violent experiences can have on a child’s life. I found this story to be very moving and a vital read, because people often do not think of the pain others go through, especially if they are portrayed as evil and violent. Throughout the story, Rex learns to stand up for himself, while being there for his abusive family as well. The story explains the reasons his parents acted the way they did, even though their actions were unacceptable. A memory of a sister, who passed, plays a beautiful role in this story, as our character learns to cope and stay strong through all the pain.

I believe this book has a beautiful message, though it may be a tough read for those who aren’t ready to dig into certain topics. The book focuses heavily on abuse, both verbal and physical. Demeaning words are used often, and violence plays a heavy role in the plot of the story. If a person has or is going through something similar, the read may bring back difficult memories.

This book was written in a slightly confusing, and rushed format. Although the book felt fast-paced and rigorous, it was vital to how the story was portrayed. This is a real recount of the author’s true life experiences and it felt very personal and realistic.

This story consists of only five characters, but each is written with such emotion and empathy, it never felt boring or dull. Although some of these characters can seem evil and horrid, because of the nature of the book, they are extremely well-developed and dynamic. The most important theme in this novel is forgiveness and healing. As the author struggles to forgive his parents for the trauma he has endured, we learn about how difficult it is to give up on family, no matter what they have done to you.

The overall plot of this memoir is very simple. It follows the life of Rex as he grows up in his abusive household, emphasizing the worst moments he endured. Memories were included as well as dream sequences that added to the story’s depth.

Overall, I believe this book changed my perspective in ways I didn’t expect. It brought me a new way to cope if I ever were to feel down or alone. To know that children all over the world are going through experiences like this every day, helps me realize how strong human beings can be. This was a wonderfully written memoir handling serious topics, and I believe the result was perfect. I will read this book again if I ever feel like I need a reminder to be strong and enjoy the little things in life.
