*This is a Young Adult novel, for ages 13 and up*
Hazel Grace Lancaster is 16 years old, and has been battling thyroid cancer for the past 3 years. She is now suffering from clinical depression, so her doctor tells her to go to a cancer support group.
The support group seems pointless at first, but then she meets Augustus Waters, a boy who had osteosarcoma a year and a half ago. He had to get his leg amputated, but now he’s doing just fine, on a
“roller coaster that only goes up”.
Hazel doesn’t realize why Augustus is talking to her, interested in her. She’s just a girl with a pageboy haircut and a cannula up her nose because her lungs don’t work on their own. But the more she hangs out with Augustus, the more she likes him. And he likes her too.
Hazel tells Augustus about her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten. The two of them end up going to Amsterdam and searching for Peter Van Houten, who has made no public contact since he published his only book. Hazel and Augustus have many questions about his book. They find him through his publisher, and he is not what they thought.
Augustus teaches Hazel to live life to the fullest, no matter the circumstances. People are dying. Some die slowly, and some die faster. That just means to try everything, do everything, because you only live once. Even if you’re dying, it doesn’t mean you’re dead, so instead of looking at the things you cannot do, do the things you can do with courage and kindness.
When they get back, Hazel gets some horrible news. Augustus has cancer again, a lot of it. He must now have to go through this painful journey. Will Hazel and Augustus battle through this together and survive? Read the book to find out!
