Red, White, and Whole by Rajani LaRocca

Reha lives in two worlds.

Throughout the school week, Reha has her best friend, Rachel. She is in a world that is white –
blonde hair, hazel, blue, and green eyes. Gossip and school lunches. Crushes and school
subjects.

On the weekends, Reha goes “Indianning.” Reha has a best friend, Sunita or Sunny. She is in a world that is brown. Black hair, and dark eyes. Gossip and samosas. Crushes and MTV music videos.

Her parents are a part of only one of these worlds.

Although both worlds have laughter, music, happiness. Reha is torn between the two. Should she be the smart, perfect Indian child her parents want her to be, or should she be the thirteen year old, fun-loving girl that she wants to be?

Reha means star, her Amma’s name, Punam, means moon. They are connected in the sky. But are in different worlds in real life.

But when Reha finds out that her Amma is sick with leukemia, she knows that she has to be the perfect child her parents want her to be to help her mother get better. Reha dreams of being a doctor, but the sight of blood makes her faint. But she has to face her fear to help.

With the help of Sunny, Rachel, her parents, and a new friend named Pete, can Reha help her mother and find the world that she belongs in? Because how can the stars go on if the moon is missing in her sky?
