“Enough with this pretending nonsense. If you want him, go get him. Don’t miss your shot.”
The summer of broken rules by K.L. Walther is a young adult contemporary romance. I wanted to read this book because I heard many good things about it on social media and I figured it would be the perfect summer read!
Synopsis:
Meredith Fox is returning back to Martha’s Vineyard for her cousin’s big wedding where all of the family is reuniting. This summer, however, is much different than the rest, as this is the first summer Meredith is back home since the passing of her sister, Claire. There is a massive assassin water gun competition because when Meredith’s family visited her cousins in the summer when they were younger they would always have these assassin water gun fights in which Claire would always dominate and win every game. Due to this, Meredith’s cousin who was very close to Claire decided to honor her by having one big assassin game throughout the wedding festivities. In this game we met Wit, the younger brother of the groom, who has a big shocking secret.
Review:
I thought the writing was very beautiful! I think K.L. Walther wrote the grieving of Claire, Meredith’s sister amazingly. I could truly feel Meredith’s pain through the pages of the book and felt very connected to her as a character. There was a plot twist that was very shocking to me; I had my suspicions, but I was missing a huge chunk of the twist in my theories. I really liked Witt and Meredith’s storyline and wanted them to be happy together. This book was the perfect summer read and we got to see Meredith’s cousin’s wedding which was absolutely beautiful and so emotional! We learned a lot about her cousin and the groom, so it was so heartwarming to see those characters finally be together forever. (Side note: I need K.L. Walther to write a book about the cousin and her groom) There was a slightly confusing part in which a callback from earlier in the book is made and I didn’t put the clues together as they were very early on in the book. I would have enjoyed it more if that call back was hinted at earlier in the book so it made the reveal even more interesting. Overall, I thought this book was beautifully written and I struggled to put it down, especially after the twist, because I just wanted to know more!
